Stuck Future presents places and people that bear the imprint of a changed world. The images do not document a story, but the quiet realization that the future did not turn out as we imagined in the nineties.
During that period, many of us believed that a more open, free and predictable era was beginning. Regime change, technological development and globalization held the promise of a new world. However, it has since become clear that these hopes were only partially fulfilled. They did not collapse overnight, but slowly slipped away, and reality took a different direction than we expected.
These photographs are born when the external sight unexpectedly meets an internal memory or feeling emerging from deep within. These moments do not reconstruct the past, but make visible the internal space where memory, the present and the once imagined future are present at the same time.
The sensibilities of the grunge culture of the nineties are an important inspiration for me. Not as visual references, but as a way of thinking: a recognition that behind everyday spaces and human presence there is always another, more difficult to articulate reality.
Stuck Future is about the distance that stretches between what we once hoped for and what the world has finally become.
